Dokument Press – A short history of publishing
Just as Astrid Lindgren we began our path with becoming rejected. We had already been active as magazine publishers and distributors when Malcolm Jacobson in 2000 published the book They Call Us Vandals. No publisher wanted to publish the book (which has sold out of their 10 000 copies). Out of this grew the awareness about organizing a publishing house with its own distribution.
The first years were tentative, but since 2006 we have a steady release of about 8 to 10 titles per year, all in the context of street culture. Since Sweden is a small country, we were aware from the start that international distribution is the right approach.
We are now one of the few Swedish publishers with a worldwide distribution. For this reason, we give out all our books in two editions, one in Swedish and one in English. Some of our books are also released in languages like French, German and Spanish. One of our titles is bilingual in English and Chinese. In Scandinavia, we ourselves or our sister publishers do the distribution. We rely on a network of independent booksellers, museum stores, lifestyle shops and galleries. As an international publishing house with its own distribution, we have high ceilings to the delight of both writers, designers and book printer. Twice so far, our books have been rewarded for their design at the Swedish Art of Books.
